wow! I'm from Los Angeles and when doing my research of coffee places in Santa Barbara I knew Kin was somewhere I had to go to. I've been on a matcha journey for a little bit now and this is almost comparable to some of the places I've been to in LA. Their matcha einspanner was so tasty delicious. They really fill the cup to the top before adding their cream top to it. The cream top is on the thicker end but that doesn't impact the taste of the drink. If you're planning on stopping by, I recommend coming earlier in the day as the line can get really long.
So good! We got four donuts of different flavors and they were so fresh! We ended up eating all four before our coffee even came out! The coffee flavors are so unique but they are rich! Consider sharing the coffee.
We came in a bit later, and were greeted by probably the nicest cafe owner I've ever met, Will! We came in on a "student night" so the place had scattered student groups cramming with some great ambient music playing to set the focus just right-something special that Will said he liked to do after "usual" cafe hours, to help the local university students (which is pretty darn amazing!) The interior design was a beautiful Japanese modern wood slat ceiling and trim on minimalist white decor, with even a traditional floor sat Japanese table in one corner. The rest of the staff was super friendly as well, and worked well to be helpful to not only customers, but also each other. We ordered the Matcha Einspanner as a sort of after dinner treat, and it was delicious-the only better quality matcha I've had was in actual Japan, so I highly recommend! We were even offered a free, freshly baked (by the super sweet, and super talented aspiring pastry chef Kiki) Match "snickerdoodle" cookie... it was still warm, and absolutely delicious also!! They're experimenting with possible new ideas for their pastry menu, so here's hoping this yummy little surprise ends up a permanent addition. Thanks for all the amazing Matcha marvels Kin!! I hope we make it back for a visit again soon!! An absolutely wonderful place!! Make sure you ask for Kiki's Matcha cookies to go with your Matcha Einspanner!! You'll thank me (and so will your tastebuds!)
We stopped by on our last morning in Santa Barbara for a sweet breakfast. We got there a bit before opening and there were people sitting outside and waiting until they opened the doors. Then we formed a line after the doors opened. This spot was clean and bright and minimalist. We decided on our drinks, then we had to see what flavors of mochi donuts they had available. We decided on Vietnamese Coffee and Black Sesame Latte plus 3 donuts. Vietnamese Coffee - pretty good and strong Black Sesame Latte - yum! Make sure to mix the black sesame and the coffee together. It's like they spooned the dessert on top of coffee. Just a bit of sweetness and great flavor. Raspberry Passionfruit Mochi donut - yum with a fresh raspberry Dubai Chocolate - chocolate, pistachios and shredded phillo, it was pretty and tasted good but a mess to eat :) Ube Cheesecake - the Ube tasted ok but the cheesecake was delicious Service was quick and friendly. Parking was easy in the shared lot. Recommended!
Over the long weekend there was a line going out the door and I know why! This place is soooo cute and the taste is just as pure as the aesthetic. We came at noon on Monday and I checked there Instagram and unfortunately they were already sold out of all their donuts :( but alas we still waited to try their amazing looking drinks. The line was filled with teeny-boppers and college students and it moved pretty fast. The store doesn't have much seating but most we're taking their drinks to go after they snapped a couple pics. The young man at the cashier was lovely and all smiles even though I'm sure they were busy. He offered us a cup of barley tea and was super sweet. While our drinks were being made they also sold out of their Ube drinks so I would make sure to get here early because it seems like the demand is high! I had seen pictures of the matcha einspanner and had to try the foam top. It was soft, sweet and the match was strong and super herbal. They went very well together and it was fun to drink! My partner got the Thai cream top. DONT SLEEP ON THE THAI ICED TEA HERE!!! I'm not sure what mix they use but it's one of the best Thai teas I've had with a super complex flavor with roasted nutty notes that went so well with the cream. 10/10 in every way, just wish I had a chance to try a donut!
The Matcha Black sesame is SO GOOD! I was definitely wired after but that's how rich the matcha was. I finished my drink so fast though I tried to savor it as much as I could. I'm the biggest fan of anything black sesame and I LOVE my matcha super strong and super rich so this was the perfect drink combination for me. The line on a Saturday afternoon was about a 50 min wait but I would say it was worth it. I also tried their banana matcha latte that my bf ordered and it had a rich taste of banana. I'm not a fan of banana but if you like banana i would recommend it. They offer a cup of barley tea to have while you wait for your drinks after ordering which was nice. There is plenty of parking in the lot and some outdoor seating. Indoor seating is very limited but they have a couple small tables and seats. I can see the hype of Kin Bakeshop and would definitely come back again when visiting Santa Barbara.
Could have sworn I had updated my review but I guess not so here it goes! I have been a fan of Kin since they were "MOR Dougnuts" and I was lucky enough to score a box of 4 mochi donuts during the pandemic. Tommy, the owner, has always been so humble and friendly, and seeing how his vision transformed into the beautiful vision that is Kin Bakeshop, following the kickstarter campaign, is such a joy. It is clear that Tommy has meticulously thought out every single detail and is truly passionate about connecting with members of his community and serving up delicious baked goods and drinks with unique flavors and ingredients. The brioche donuts are so incredibly fluffy and the fillings explode in your mouth. The mochi donuts are the perfect bite of soft, chewy, and sweetness/tangyness. I have had other brioche and mochi donuts and there is no comparison - the texture and flavor profiles offered by Kin are superior. They also have a fabulous assortment of drinks to choose from. I elected to try the weekend special - blueberry matcha latte. SO GOOD. Highly highly recommend everyone go and show support for an incredible small business . I also encourage getting in line early, 8:30-8:45ish, on days when they open at 9:30. If I was still local to the area I would be here regularly. Do not sleep on an opportunity to stop by
My boyfriend and I visited this place during our trip to Santa Barbara. It's about 15 minutes away from state street, located at a small plaza. We went on a Saturday morning around 12pm and the line was sooo long, we were in line for 30 minutes. Once you order though they bring out drinks and food fast. It's a small shop, only about 5 small tables to sit at and a standing counter. They update how long the wait is and what's in stock on their Instagram stories. The shop itself is super cute and clean, they have a bathroom. The workers are also super nice. They change their menu offers weekly which is cool. We ordered a regular iced matcha latte and the banana matcha. The matcha quality is really good, very strong and well balanced with the milk and sugar. I didn't really like the banana matcha, but that's just a personal preference. They make their banana milk in house so there was chunks of banana in it, but my boyfriend liked it. We also got a churro mochi donut that was good, nothing special compared to other mochi donuts I've had. I'd recommend this spot, it seems like the only place in the area with quality matcha!
BEST MATCHA DRINK I'VE EVER HAD!! The Matcha Coconut Cloud (coconut water, coconut meat, and matcha whipped cream) was absolutely incredible and perfect in every way. It's by far the best matcha drink I've ever tasted, and surpasses most of the coffees and milk teas I've had too. It was the perfect marriage of freshness, sweetness, and creaminess, all rounded out by the slight nutty coconut flavor. The matcha wasn't bitter at all and the entire drink was fantastic even when all the ice had melted. Strawberry Milk is also phenomenal -- wonderful flavor, creamy and rich, and perfectly fruity, topped with their luscious whipped cream. Yogurt parfait and raspberry lychee mochi donuts hit the spot, but it was the drinks that really stood out for me! Can't wait to come back!!
I love this place!! I live in LA but I would definitely make the trip out here once in a while to get their coffees/pastries. It's very cute and the staff was really friendly. Everything is baked fresh too. Matcha and peach mango mochi donut (5/5): So good! So flavorful and chewy. I liked both flavors but the peach mango was a stand out. The flavor was so bright, citrusy, fresh. I'd definitely get this again. Coconut matcha cloud (5/5): This drink is trendy now on social media but I was first introduced to it at this cafe and it did not disappoint. It was so good and came with coconut meat inside which tasted great. Black Sesame Cream Top (5/5): Another winner, my friend got this drink and I tried it. I loved the black sesame combo with the espresso. It's definitely heavier than the coconut matcha cloud but has a punch if you need a pick me up. Overall, great experience and I can't wait until I come here again!
